UN committee votes to ask International Court to decide on Israel ‘annexation’ of OPT

The United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee (on Decolonisation) has voted 98-17 on a resolution to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on whether Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal on the grounds that its duration (more than 55 years) makes it a de facto annexation.

The resolution also asked the court for an opinion on the status of Jerusalem.

The United Kingdom abstained from the vote. The United States, Canada and Australia, with Israel, voted against the resolution. It was also noted that India abstained.

The resolution must now be approved by the full General Assembly before it can go to the Hague.
